As much as we wanted to bring you a “Happy New Year” post today, our mood is somber as we received some devastating news from Northern California this afternoon. Philip Wolcott, father to ABA Girl Pro Taylor Wolcott (17) and her brother, Kyle (19); husband to Shellie, passed away in his sleep in the early hours of January 1, according to a statement sent to News via Facebook by the family. He was 44 years old. The cause of death is unknown at this time.
These events left us in shock, as we just traded text messages with Philip three days ago, on Wednesday, when he, ever the proud BMX papa, gave us a little pre-new-years-scoop on Taylor signing a 2011 deal with Tangent. Before that, he was right there with a “Merry Christmas” text on Christmas Day, and we signed off the text exchange with an eager “See you in Reno…looking forward to catching up.” Now, of course, that will not be possible, and the trip–indeed all of 2011–will have a pall cast upon it knowing our friend is not with us. The things we could have said had we known it would be the last time…
Shellie, Philip’s wife of 19 years, wanted to thank the BMX community and friends all over for the outpouring of support, saying:
“He was a great man and father and will be deeply missed. We have had great support from our friends here– they have been with us through this horrible day. The BMX community has been very thoughtful and we have received numerous Facebook posts and messages from all over the world. Our family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.”
BMXNEWS will have more information on services, and a trust fund being set up for the family to help ease the financial strain of this tragic loss.
As sad as we are at the loss of our friend, remembering him will always make us smile. Come join us on Vintage to tell some Philip stories, and share condolences.
Shellie sent me an update with the details and location of the memorial services for Philip.
