Connor Fields to Make SLC Return

Connor Fields on the Comeback Trail

Last time we saw Connor Fields, he was riding a Free Agent. Then, on January 5, BMX News carried an article saying “Connor IS a Free Agent.” A couple weeks later, on January 21, we reported he inked a deal with BMX Racing group to rep their product line, and ride their new “Chase BMX” frame.

Since then, Connor has been kind of like a nuclear sub under the polar ice cap…ever-present, but not in sight. In fact, we have never even seen him suited up in his “Chase” race kit until the above photo surfaced on Facebook yesterday.

That will all change next week, as he makes his return to the track at the ABA Great Salt Lake Nationals in Salt Lake City, UT. Connor says he will be racing A-Pro on Saturday and will “see how it goes.” That seems to leave the door open for a possible upgrade to Elite on Sunday, if his A Pro ride goes well (as we expect it will).

BMX News will get with Connor at next week’s race to give you a peek at his Chase BMX whip, as well as some tasty news on the next few months Connor has coming his way.

Jesse Day hits the first turn at warp speed on Sunday at the ABA Great Salt Lake Nationals

OK, sports fans. Next time anyone hears me saying that I am “up for a road trip,” please help me drill down on that a bit. Sure, there is a tinge of romance to being out on the open road, wind in your hair, etc. But once the 2:30AM reality sets in, it becomes a real drag. So, I’m definitely not saying “no more road trips,” by any means…but the whole sleeping-in-the-car-in-a-rest-area thing, while an easy do at 18 yrs old, is not much fun at 40+.

As you all know, I like to have my photo galleries posted on the day of the race, when at all possible. So, posting this one three days after the fact is a real annoyance. But, I think you will find, as I did, that it was worth the wait.

Great Salt Lake Fireworks Fuse Lit

after six weeks off, Donny Robinson makes his return at the Great Salt Lake Nationals

While there are certain to be many great displays of things that go boom in Salt Lake City this weekend, BMXers will be lighting it up in the daylight at Rad Canyon BMX. As one of the last races before the UCI World Championships in South Africa, top amateurs and elites alike have ventured from all points in the Western US. BMXNEWS arrived on the scene at the mid-point of pro practice, after a leisurely 20-hour drive. Saturday’s race is designated the UCI “North American Continental Championships” for the Elite classes. And while there are no titles, or plates at stake, there are “Category 3″ UCI points. In the scheme of UCI points, only the Chula Vista Supercross in September will be worth more points in North America.

After several weeks on the sidelines, Donny Robinson is back in uniform, and looking (and, by his account, feeling) strong as ever. The pre-race had 73 motos tonight which, according to “the formula” seems to foreshadow about 170-something for tomorrow. We were really happy to see Al Roybal rockin the ABA mic for the first time in tonight’s pre-race. Saw Mike Day talking with Afro Bob DeWilde…possibly about hair styles, as Mike says he is “letting it grow out.” Seriously though, it was good to see Mike here in Utah and says his recovery is progressing well, and he is feeling better every day.

Meanwhile, in addition to the action on the track, there are some really great news tidbits taking shape in the pits, which we should be ready to report tomorrow and/or Sunday.

BMXNEWS will have a report each day from Salt Lake, and our sister site, BMXNOW, will have photos. We will also be tweeting as-they-happen updates from the infield (follow “bmxnow” on Twitter).
