2009 ABA Grands – Awards

As we noted earlier, all major ABA titles were up for grabs as of the start of the mains on Sunday. ABA does this awesome “rolling” format where they announce the person in each main who is in contention for a National title (National Number one Amateur, Girl, Cruiser, Girl Cruiser, Pro, Girl Pro and Pro Cruiser). It really makes a great show of it, with people rooting for (or against) the person on the gate now, who has the chance, with a win, to snatch the title out of the hands of the person who just took over the points lead in the previous race.

This was huge in the National Number One Girl title, as BA announced that Kristin Hokit had the title locked up with a win in 17-27 Girls. Kristin lead the race to the last turn, where Samantha Bretheim slipped into the inside, and made the pass to take the trophy of the day, and hand the National Number One Girl title back to Jordan Nopens for another year.

2009 ABA Grands – Sunday

Sunday brought the third round of motos, the qualifying rounds and the main events. All ABA titles were on the line going in, with not one “lock” in the house. BMXNOW was on duty at the stroke of eight Sunday morning to get the third round of pros, and a few select am classes. The competition was so thick that even some that you’d never see after the first round were waking up early to get their transfer slot.

As always, Saturday at the 2009 ABA Grand National contained the first two rounds of motos. With 461 motos, this ABA Grands was 31 motos shy of 2008, but the action just seemed to hit a higher amperage this year.

2009 ABA Disney Cup Fall Nationals

This year’s ABA Disney Cup exceeded already-high expectations by delivering three solid days of great Racing, compelling Pro action by some of the top BMX Racing pros in the world, and the intangible, positive, vibe that comes from knowing you are taking part in something big.

BMXNEWS.COM’s sister site, BMXNOW.COM was there from the first pre-practice laps by the build team til the frontloader took the first loads of dirt out of the SIlver Springs Arena on Sunday. Once edited down to the best of the best, we have over 200 photos in three galleries.

ABA US Open Nationals – Day Two Gallery

Images from Day Two at the ABA US Open Nationals, held at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. Sunday had 155 motos, and lots of hot racing action on the new, permanent facility built right in the heart of the hallowed OTC facility. It really is an amazing feat, when you think about it, that USAC and ABA were able to team up to get this done. MegaProps to all involved in making it happen!

Great racing, and some equally tasty photos made it an evening to remember under the lights in Chula Vista. Maris Strombergs of So Cal (née Latvia) and Laëtitia le Corguille of France topped the podium and were bestowed with original, handmade surfboards with graphics by Bob Haro as remembrances of their So-hot SoCal wins.

Grands Amateur Photo Galleries

Over the past few days, aside from battling a nasty case of “track flu,” we’ve painstakingly edited over 350 images from the Saturday and Sunday amateur classes down to 212. As we always do with our race coverage photos, we have gone through, cropped, adjusted exposure and optimized the shot for your best possible enjoyment. We have uploaded images large enough for you to pull down a file capable of making small to midsize prints. That is with our compliments. We are currently waiting on the final plate winners, and will be reporting on that once we receive the list.
