Danny Caluag Philippine Athlete of the Year

After winning the Gold Medal at last year’s Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, Danny Caluag became something of a national sports hero in the Philippines, ultimately appearing at the Royal Palace in Manila. And as the only Gold Medal of the 15 won by the Philippines at the games, it’s not hard to figure out why there was such fanfare, including a $35,000 bonus check from telecom company, “Smart Communications.”

This week, Danny flew back to Manila (Pasay, to be exact) to personally-accept the “Athlete of the Year” award from the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA)–the oldest and among the most respected media organizations in the country.
