Podcast: TRA Double Cross

October 15, 2014 by

TRA Double Cross

Earlier this month, Trail Riders of America held their first “Double Cross” event in Bethlehem, PA. It was a two-wide dirt jump course where the riders started on a roll-in hill, with a backwards-falling, moto-style starting gate, then raced each other around the giant jumps to a finish line. Not quite traditional DJ and not quite traditional BMX racing, but the participants all raved about the fun they had.

There were two events in one–a traditional Dirt Jump contest, and the Double Cross Race–each with a cash purse of $4000 for the top eight finishers.

BMX racers like Derek Sipkoi, Victor Behm (who also won the Red Bull Berm Burners event in 2013 and 2014), Steven Cisar, Matt Kelty and others put their race rides against freestyle stars like Chris Doyle, Van Homan, Aaron Ross and more to see who got around the course fastest.

Red Bull put out an edit this week, stating “Van Homan Explores the Future of BMX Racing.” In it, Van talks about his racing roots and how, to him, “BMX is all about having fun on a 20″ bike.” We loved seeing his stoke-level to get out there and race! (embed below)

On this episode of the Announcers Tower Podcast, we are joined by Mike Gentilcore, CEO of Trail Riders of America, the organization who ran the event, and Victor Behm, winner of the Double Cross class. Mike gives us some great insight into how the event came together, the course and his response to media reports that this could be the new “third discipline of BMX racing.” Vic tells us about the competition aspect of the weekend, competing against the dirt jumpers, and how events like this fit into his idea of BMX racing in the long term.

—Chris Doyle

“I had a lot of fun out there…I’m just hoping to get out of the ‘loser’s bracket’ just so I can race again.”
—Van Homan

“You wanted to push it a little bit harder, and go a little bit faster, but you really can’t because you need to stay focused on the backsides and make sure you catch those…”
—Steven Cisar
