2016 UCI BMX World Championships in Medellin, Colombia

Just as we posted the “fly-overs” of the 2013 BMX Worlds track, UCI announced today that Medellin, Colombia will be the host city for the 2016 UCI BMX World Championships. Medellin is also famous for being the home town of Olympic Gold Medalist, Mariana Pajon (above).

In a release, UCI President Pat McQuaid said: “We’re delighted that Medellin, the ‘City of the Eternal Spring’ in the Andes Mountains, will be our host city in 2016 for the UCI BMX World Championships. The event will take place on a brand new track built in the city’s existing cycling complex.

2016 is, obviously, an Olympic year, and this will be the first time in the three-cycle history of Olympic BMX that the Worlds are not held in the same country in which the Olympic Games will be held (previously China in 2008 and England in 2012). No word on whether or not Brazil put in a bid to host the championships, or which other countries were in the running.

BMX News will keep you posted on new developments as they become available.
