Joey Bradford’s Carbon Prophecy

Well, here are two things we haven’t seen in a while: Joey Bradford and a carbon fiber, pro-size BMX race frame. Joey has been on injury leave healing up after his wreck at the ABA Grands. And carbon frames? Well, they have been off getting better too. Better priced and better engineered.

Now the two come together in the form of the Prophecy “Scud” frame–the creation of French engineer Denis Labigang, formerly of MBK. Reports are that Denis left the warm embrace of a day job at the drawing boards, to blaze his own trail with a…wait for it… “prophecy”…he had about carbon frames for BMX racing.

Certain scoffers and detractors say carbon fiber may be fine for forks, or your next iPad chassis, but it’s fame for frames is mainly in the brain.

“Not so,” say those in the know. This is not your granddaddy’s carbon fiber. Lots of advances have been made in resins and the production/makeup of the actual fabric that underlies the process in recent years.

A retail of USD$799 is definitely grounds to make the faint-of-wallet faint, but the 3.19lb weight and characteristic stiffness of carbon is enough to make any walls of resistance melt away.

Ol’ number 75 received his new ride from across the pond, has it built up, and will be ready for a rollout real soon. No word if that will be this weekend in Chula Vista, but at the very least, we thinks the bike will make an appearance, to the ooohs and ahhhhs of all in attendance (well, most…ok some).

Just when the “I ride only mild steel” debate was starting to die down.
