USA Cycling BMX Championships Schedule
The BMX “force” seemed disrupted a bit last weekend when, for the first time in three years, top riders were headed to Desoto for the ABA Supernationals, but NOT racing the USAC National Championships on the Saturday.
The single-race-championship is the gateway to qualify to the UCI BMX World Championships each year (this year in Copenhagen). For 2011, the race was moved to the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. This move makes it possible for the Elite classes to be run on the Supercross track, while the amateur classes run their “Birth year” classes on the ABA track up top.
Amateur racing starts Saturday, April 16th at 10:30AM and, if similar to the past few years, should be wrapped up by 1:30 or 2. At 2PM, the Elite classes (Jr. Women, Jr. Men, Elite Women, Elite Men) will start on the Supercross track, and run three motos, quarters/semis as needed, and a main.
The top 16 in each class will qualify to the UCI BMX World Championships. If fewer than 16 riders in the class, all riders will be qualified automatically.
This race is for US Citizens only, and appropriate proof of citizenship is required (check with the ABA for more info on this).
Bookending the USAC race is the ABA So Cal Nationals. Day one will run on Friday, starting at 2PM. Day Two will follow the normal ABA Sunday start time of 8AM. Both Nationals will offer all normal ABA classes (including A Pro, Vet Pro, Jr. & Elite Men, Jr. & Elite Women).
BMXNEWS is looking forward to a very special weekend of racing, and to getting a taste of the SX action that we’ll see back on the big hill come September.
