Kyle Bennett and Donny Robinson Injured Saturday In OTC Tangle
Saturday Morning, while the rest of us were in either Tennessee, Massachusetts, or our local track, many of Team USA’s top Elite riders were continuing their nonstop training program to prepare for the upcoming 2010 UCI BMX World Championships in South Africa, just two short weeks away. Present at the US Olympic Training Center were, among others, Kyle Bennett and Donny reigning World Champion Donny Robinson.
Donny had just come back from an injury to his ribs and lung after a bad wreck at the Madrid Supercross, and subsequent re-injury at the OTC after a month of recovery. This time, it would be seven weeks on the sidelines, and a return just last week in Salt Lake. Speaking of Salt lake, during Saturday’s Elite Men Semi, Kyle was involved in a pretty bad crash which reportedly rang his bell, but good.
Reports are unclear at this time as to exactly how it happened, but somehow, Donny and Kyle got together on the third straight of the Chula Vista SX track, and both were taken, by ambulance, to a local hospital with various injuries. On Sunday, a little more than 24 hours following the accident, USA Cycling’s BMX Program Director, Mike King issued the following statement:
Kyle has two fractures in his left collar bone, an AC joint separation on his right shoulder, three fractured ribs, a bruised lung, a broken cheek bone and a laceration (scratch) to his liver. Kyle may need surgery on his cheek bone once the swelling goes down. He will stay at (an area) Hospital in San Diego for the next week.
Donny has been discharged from the hospital, he basically re-fractured his ribs, and had a minor collapse to his lungs. No fluid was spotted, or drainage tube needed.
Both are out for the UCI BMX World Championships. No decision will be made to replace these riders until next week.
BMXNEWS will monitor the situation with both riders, and hopefully be able to bring you some details on their recovery as they become available for comment. Keep it here on News for the latest.
