Great Salt Lake Fireworks Fuse Lit

July 2, 2010 by BMXNEWS.COM Editors

after six weeks off, Donny Robinson makes his return at the Great Salt Lake Nationals

While there are certain to be many great displays of things that go boom in Salt Lake City this weekend, BMXers will be lighting it up in the daylight at Rad Canyon BMX. As one of the last races before the UCI World Championships in South Africa, top amateurs and elites alike have ventured from all points in the Western US. BMXNEWS arrived on the scene at the mid-point of pro practice, after a leisurely 20-hour drive. Saturday’s race is designated the UCI “North American Continental Championships” for the Elite classes. And while there are no titles, or plates at stake, there are “Category 3″ UCI points. In the scheme of UCI points, only the Chula Vista Supercross in September will be worth more points in North America.

After several weeks on the sidelines, Donny Robinson is back in uniform, and looking (and, by his account, feeling) strong as ever. The pre-race had 73 motos tonight which, according to “the formula” seems to foreshadow about 170-something for tomorrow. We were really happy to see Al Roybal rockin the ABA mic for the first time in tonight’s pre-race. Saw Mike Day talking with Afro Bob DeWilde…possibly about hair styles, as Mike says he is “letting it grow out.” Seriously though, it was good to see Mike here in Utah and says his recovery is progressing well, and he is feeling better every day.

Meanwhile, in addition to the action on the track, there are some really great news tidbits taking shape in the pits, which we should be ready to report tomorrow and/or Sunday.

BMXNEWS will have a report each day from Salt Lake, and our sister site, BMXNOW, will have photos. We will also be tweeting as-they-happen updates from the infield (follow “bmxnow” on Twitter).
