Double the Pleasure on Tap for the 2010 UCI BMX Worlds Track
Today, the UCI released the track design for the upcoming 2010 UCI BMX World Championships happening in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa July 29 – August 1. The track features two starting hills—the first of its kind, as far as BMXNEWS is aware of. On the right route, you have an amped-up Supercross track, complete with 10-meter (or so) starting ramp, totalling 1263 feet. On the left, a more tame, though way-technical-looking amateur lap, totaling 1163 feet. See below for the actual obstacle distances speced out by track builder extraordinare, Tom Ritz. The Elite side features a berm-jump and a 38-foot peak-to-peak first jump. Both tracks share a last straightaway.
No question that the UCI is stepping up the pace, and breaking new ground for future track designs. This takes it way beyond the tried-and-true “pro section,” and it is going to be interesting to see what future US-based tracks, especially the ABA Grands, may look like given this development.
