Alienation Comes Through With the Clutch

Seems like the so-called “direct-engagement” trend is taking wing for the new year. At the recent Interbike trade show in Las Vegas, we were treated to a couple offerings for BMX Racing. One was a Junior hub by Stealth… a reduced version of their popular DE pro hub. The other was where the oohs and aaahs were coming from, since its technology is different (and more recently introduced) than the Stealth—the Alienation Clutch.
The clutch is made from 6061 T6 Aluminum, uses 3/8″ hardware and is 36 hole only. At 515 Grams for the back, it is right in the zone. It is also in the sweet spot on the pricing side as well, bringing Direct Engagement to your ride for only $200 (MSRP, rear only).
The Clutch has a modular “clutch” drive mechanism (above, left) which is easy to disassemble and service (it also allows you to flip the mechanism to make your bike left-side-drive in one, easily-reversible, move, should you ever want to). The Clutch requires a proprietary Alienation cog/driver which, the company says, will be first available in three or four of the most popular racing sizes (then possibly more). The product will be available come Jan 1, and more info can be found after Dec 1 on www.alienationbmx.com
