“Fantasy Factory” Hyper Hack To Hit Walmart and IBDs

September 29, 2009 by BMXNEWS.COM Editors

BMXNEWS.COM reports on the Hyper Bicycles BMX Sidehack featured on MTV Fantasy Factory. The production version will be for sale on Walmart.com in time for Christmas
The recent Interbike trade show in Las Vegas brought out new BMX Racing innovations, and new school takes on old artforms. One such example of “what’s old is new again” was the showing of a limited-edition production BMX Sidehack by Hyper Bicycles. The hack was the brainchild of DJ Greyboy and was the centerpiece of an episode of MTV’s “Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory.” Rob said it was Greyboy’s “new hustle,” and the mantra “Trust your pilot…respect your Monkey” was laid down. Not long after taking a few laps in the Factory, Rob’s manager, Jeremy Larner, arrived on the scene and Rob spitted those fateful words “We can move units of these in Walmart!” So happens that Jeremy and Hyper honcho Clay Goldsmid are tight, and a bike was born. Anyway, you can watch the episode for the story using the link below (punchline: Dave Mirra and Rob backflip the thing into the foam pit with tow-help from a mo-cycle).

The result of all that airtime is a limited-edition, production version of the hack, being sold on Walmart.com and by Hyper dealers, starting in November. Hyper VP of Marketing, Jud Ciancio (yes, the very same Team Hyper Jud Ciancio that you see at the top of all the national results) told it like this:

“We produced this one (above) in our factory overseas, and we’re going to bring a good quantity of them in, to sell in Walmart at a retail of $300. You can go to Walmart.com and order it, and it’ll be shipped to your local (Walmart) store for pickup, with no shipping charge. We’ll also offer it to Hyper dealers, and I imagine there will be some shipping on top of the final price (which will be set by the dealer).”

When asked about the timeframe of availability, Jud said “They’re on the water now, so we expect them by late October. Walmart is taking a certain quantity, and the rest will be available to dealers, probably near the first of November.”

Unlike some hacks of the 70s, the Hyper “Impakt” Sidehack is a one-piece unit, with the frame and hack welded together.

Who knows, you may see dR as pilot in the annual sidehack race at the ABA Grands.
