The helicopter used for TV and photo media to capture aerial images of the UCI BMX Supercross in Chula Vista earlier this month crashed into a hillside the following day. The NTSB Website states that two people were aboard the ROBINSON R44 II rotocraft (tail number N4174P) when it crashed “under unknown circumstances in rough terrain near San Ysabel, CA.” The agency site lists those onboard as “seriously injured,” and it is not known whether it was the same pilot who flew the chopper for the UCI the previous day.

The story of the crash was first reported by the San Diego Union Tribune on September 20, 2009. Thanks to BMX NEWS sources for linking the chopper to the one used for the race.
