Javier Colombo Worlds Interview

August 3, 2006 by BMXNEWS.COM Editors

"Did you ever think you would win the worlds? I dreamed about it. Last weekend I was feeling like I could, But had to make the main first. Making the main was the only goal I had going in. A month before I just wanted to make the main. In 2000 I got 5th in Argentina South america is always good to me.

In the semi you were last …and made it out. Won my quarters and eights..In the semi I was a little panicked because Cristian was next to me. I came out dead last and was thinking man this sucks. I was following the guys and some of them crashed.. It surprised that 4 people fell, and I cannot believe this is happening to me. Read more of what Javier has to say..Click Read More!"

"Main time. I was happy after that. Then I thought, that sucks for the guys who crashed. Then I thought about the guys who didn't make it and it was alot of heavy hitters. Thinking about all this, I knew all it would take was a good gate and I might be able to win, or at least top three.

While in second what was your thoughts? I was not letting Stumpy take off. Don't let him take off, and I was concerned about Mikey Day in third and Prokop in 4th. I was concerned in the pro section but after that I was charging Stumpy. In the last turn Stumpy went inside to protect his line and I railed the turn.

In the last turn did you anything to pass Stumpy on the last straight? I got near him and I thought , I cannot believe this is happening, then it all just happened. With all the adrenaline I didn't feel tired in the last corner and I just rode smooth. Got next to him and won the race.

Door you feel like he left the door open? I think he went inside to protect his line, which I would have done myself.. At this point I was in second and I happy but I charged down the last straight.

Describe the scene at the finish line. I knew it was close but I wasn't sure I won. People were going crazy and then it starting to set in. I had to ask a few people if this was for real. Then randy came over and said congratulations. The people from argentina were going crazy from the time I crossed the line to the time I left the podium. Kinda like The World cup of Soccer..

Did all the pros congratulate you? Yes, I was feeling like some of the pros were bummed on their finishes but still came over to say congrats. Alot of them said I deserved it and that made me feel really good. Guys who I respect coming over and telling me that,, Even randy was there to say congrats after all that.

Was you mind going in circles after the race? That night I couldn't sleep because I was thinking about my win all night. I was thinking about my long road to this event. From the time I moved to Florida, to the time I moved to Cali. Many times I thought about quitting and Cristian pushed me to keep going. I thought about the time I was working at Target and thought about quitting, But I stuck it out and now I have a title to show for all this effort. I never gave up my dream and pushed through bad times to get there..

Who was the most excited for you? Some people close to be had water in their eyes but not crying… The emotion some people had was crazy. I had tears in my eyes and it was all from the joy of wining the world championship..

Is your bike is at the UCI Center in Switzerland now that you won? Its really cool. I want to go to the UCI center and look at my bike and say ""Thats Mine, I won the worlds on that bike."" Its good for me, SE and all my sponsors. Its a true honor. Last year I saw Warwick's bike on display in some pictures and I thought ""Thats really cool….""

Only one person can hold the title, Is it crazy to think that its you? Oh yes. I always thought I could be a world champ. I didn't think it would happen though. I was talking to Jason Richardson and I told him that I needed more track speed.. To be able to get more track speed and combine that with my first straight I knew I could have shot at winning some races.

Any plans for some UCI stripes like Dale Holmes? I won't do it on my arm but I know the feeling that he had at the time he won. I won't tattoo my self with the colors but I don't blame him for getting it.

Do you look forward to putting the number 1 on your bike at every race? Yes but It will suck to get motoed with it on my bike. I don't really feel like I have to win every single weekend. No pressure at all. The worlds passed already and I 'm looking forward to racing the NBL and ABA races.

How was the after party? It was crazy. Friday night I drank one bottle of Champaign and couldn't sleep that night. The next night the real party was at a club and it was so crazy. I was so drunk that I was telling people that I loved them, and they told be they loved me. You know, Drunk BMXers spilling their hearts out to each other. And a good time for sure..

What happened to Thomas Allier at the party? He was so drunk and when the French riders we're leaving he started to cry and said he didn't want to go home. He was so drunk and wanted to stay with all his friends he hasn't seen n a long time. Thomas in a drunken cry was so funny.

How'd your family feel about your win? I called my mom after the race and she asked how I did. I told her you have the new world champ as a son. She went crazy and was screaming for like 15 minutes. She was so happy for me.

Describe a normal Javier day Before the worlds: Wake up train, get lunch with HB guys at the sushi bar and then go the track or sheep hills when its going. And taking my dog Louie running down at the beach. After the worlds: So tired all day. Wake up at 9:30 and do nothing, I don't even have a bike yet. All that training paid off and now I just think about the worlds and cant wait to get my new bike built up. And I have a cold so I have no energy.

Are you rich now? My soul is rich but Im broke. I found a dollar at the the beach the other day.

Who impressed you at the worlds? Everybody was looking fast but I focused on myself and didnt pay attention..

Do you think that racing Bubba, Kyle and the other fast americans in america all time makes you more relaxed on the gate ion Brazil…vs a rider from abroad whos first time next to Bubba is at the worlds? Oh yes. Racing them all the time in the states makes you more comfortable at all the races. If a rider from another country is racing Bubba they might be intimidated in the gate more than me.

When when you got home what did your girlfriend do to your house? My girlfriend Allisa put up banners everywhere with gold balloons withe the number one. It was so crazy in there. I love her for that. My phone had 25 messages on it and my myspace was full of comments from everybody.

Thanks to: Allisa, SE, Shimano, THE, No Whimps, Sun Ringle and Bombshell. All my friends and everybody in South America. I cannot think of everybody but I you know who you are…Thanks!!!"
