Felt Portland Dew Action Sports Tour Update
“The 3rd stop of the 5 stop Dew Action Sports Tour was this weekend in Portland, OR. Felt’s Scotty Cranmer made the trip and I am here to tell you about his adventures. Scroll down to the last paragraph for the short version or read below for the detailed adventure. Scotty decided to skip the Thursday practice and fly in Thursday night, practice all day Friday and have a short practice Saturday morning before the qualifier,.sounded like a good plan to me. Scotty’s bike did not arrive at the airport on Thursday night, no problem it will be on the Friday morning’s flight…. no bike on the Friday morning flight. Now it is time to start thinking of a plan B. We hooked up with a local KC Martin that rides on the Felt Flow Team and he drove us around town shopping for bike parts.”"KC has a Pyre Team frame but he had cut the Gyro tabs off because he runs a straight cable, not a Gyro cable like Scotty. I had an extra back wheel and a pair of Cranmer bars in my bag, so we had a start. First to Good bikes shop were we got every part except for the internal headset and chain tensioners, next to Cyclepath who had a few headsets but nothing that fit, next to Bike-n-Hike where we got the chain adjusters, still no headset. Next to River City Bicycles were they had 9 different internal headset but none that fit. With the help of the yellow pages we found another Bike-n-Hike in the next town over that had the FSA Impact headset we needed, finally! So now we had all the parts to build a complete bike, it was not the same frame he usually rides and it had a lot of different parts that he was not used to. I could tell he wasn’t going to be happy on this bike so we decided to not build it and wait for the next flight that was coming in at 8:30pm. We did not build the bike and would only build it if his bike did not show up that night. We went and watched the BMX Dirt finals that ended up 1st-Guettler, 2nd-Bohan, 3rd-Nyquist. The owner of Felt has a brother that happens to live in Portland and he dropped us off at the airport to see if we could find a bike, no luck again but the airline said we had a chance that the bike would be on the next flight at 11:30pm. We decided to rent a car so we did not have to keep bumming rides around town. The baggage claim was kind enough to give us $4 each in food coupons which is about good enough for a drink and a pack of gum at the airport. Finally @ 11:45pm we had his bike, Scotty was happy. He had blown up his headset the day before and had a new headset to put in, of coarse when we put it in the inside of the Gyro rubbed the cup and we needed a file or dremal the cup to fix it. A few hours of sleep then we were up to to find a hardware store for a file, we got the file and after 20 minutes of filing he was good to go. On the way to the contest we stopped by Goods Bikes Shop to return all of the unused parts, thanks to them for basically letting us borrow the parts for the night. Next up was the 1 hour -45min practice before the qualifier, keep in mind some riders had had two days of practice and Scotty had no ridden yet. 10 minutes into practice his wheel slipped and he hit his sprocket on coping and bending it. Back to the bike shop to buy a 25T sprocket, How is it that a 25T cost the same as a 44T? Now back up and running due to my NASCAR like mechanic abilities he was feeling good and had his lines down. Qualifying is to narrow the 30 invited rides down to 10, qualifying went 1st-Scotty, 2nd-Dave Mirra, 3rd-Morgan Wade. Finals went and it ended up 1st-Ryan Nyquist(92.75), 2nd-Scotty(92.5) and 3rd-Ryan Guettler(92) Finals were done by 6:30pm and Scotty was on a plane back to New Jersey at midnight, 24 hours after he had picked up his bike…… Short version: The airlines lost his bike causing Scotty to miss the majority of practice, he did get it the night before the contest. He qualified 1st and ended up 2nd in the final. Nyquist won and it was shown on NBC Sunday afternoon. Scotty’s next event is San Jose in 3 weeks. Heads up to anyone going to the Interbike show in Vegas at the end of September. Vans is putting on an event at the Hard Rock, invite only, Dirt on Friday and Park on Saturday afternoon.”
