Donny Robinson talks about Phoenix

February 26, 2005 by BMXNEWS.COM Editors

“We caught up with “”DR”" Donny Robinson a few days after his big win and crash in Phoenix. Donny came away with a AA Pro win and followed it up with a legendary DR crash. Seems like when Donny crashes he always gets hurt. But at the same time, the kid always comes back stronger and faster. You can never count DR out at any event. Black Mountain BMX in Phoenix has been good to DR through-out his amateur career and now he can chalk up another win there. See what Donny has to say about his weekend in Phoenix.”"Coming off a big win in Phoenix, How does it feel to pass the current ABA Champ for the win? It feels great to get another win finally and I’m super happy to do it at Black Mountain. I had a pretty good one lap for that main and the finish went my way. I’m just psyched about getting interviewed by the way hot girl from i-Sports TV. I hear Jack McDaniel is supposed to be getting me a private interview…hope he doesn’t let me down. Haha. Did the rain bring your sprits down on Saturday? Or did you just fight through it? As an amateur I’ve tripled at Black Mountain in the rain and in the sun so I knew I could do it either way. Plus, I’m known as a pretty decent “”mudder,”" so I felt confident. Phoenix has always been my favorite track and for some reason the race I want to win the most, so I didn’t want to waste the race. You have a broken collar bone from a crash in Phoenix, how the heck did that happen? I was in 4th place after the first turn and I couldn’t stand being there anymore. I knew there was another place on the track I could make a move since I didn’t want to rely on the same type of move I pulled in the AA main on Saturday and when I went to make the move in the second to last turn it put me on the outside going into the last turn. Well, I wasn’t far enough ahead of my teammate Jason Rogers as I tried to cut down on him from the outside and I hit him and went over the bars. Does winning day one help the fact that your down and out at the moment? For sure. I have been working extra hard and smart and I’m happy things went my way that day. Things happen for a reason so I’m not going to try and guess why this happened or be mad that it did. I decided to get surgery on my collarbone to both help it heal faster and be stronger. I’m going to keep working hard and smiling and that will put me back racing faster. My goal is the two NBL Florida races in 4 weeks and I need to be there. I’m not too bummed I’m missing the ABA Pasco race. Whats next for DR this summer? Any new news we don’t know about? Sponsor changes, girlfriends? Who knows what will happen this summer. I want to be busy and race and have a blast like I have been. I’m going to hopefully be hitting all the races promoting the best companies around; Avent Cycles, FLY Racing, Bombshell, FSA, SPY, Tioga, Lizard Skins, CytoSport, SixSixOne, Shimano, Sponsorhouse.com, PureFit, ATi grips and Fox Racing Shox (MTB). I listed all my sponsors for you Dale! Can you hook me up with any more co-sponsors? Haha. I’ve also got a few big clinics I’m planning on doing after I heal up so I’m excited about those. As it stands, the younger AA’s are winning the races this year. Feels good to contribute to that huh? Yeah like I said, I’ve put a bunch of effort into this year and I feel it’s starting to pay off. I’m going to roll with whatever comes and enjoy the life I’m able to live right now. I can’t wait to get back racing because as Gary Ellis said in the Code 4130 video, “”The best thing is seeing your friends.”" I tried to make this interview as good as possible but I’m typing with one hand and still a bit out of it, so sorry about the contents and hope to see everyone soon. Thanks for the opportunity.”
